Poem: initiations

“How are you, Jerry?”

a laughing Tibetan

officially

“Richard Gere”

registered me

young woman forgot

for the Dalai Lama's

a woman guard poked

pepper spray and nearly

“oh no”

teaching of Mongolians

“How are you Gere?”

Tsong-ka-pa

the kind face

laughing

aging

Atisha

Indians with rifles

of the Dalai Lama

at the nonviolence and lack

of graspingness

“Richard Gere”

of unassuming crowds

at the unemphasis

on fame, money, corruption

insisting on each asking for herself

and reasoning

what the truth

is
