poem: red

did not stay in Virginia
below dangling rasp berry

my father worded FDR
whites walked high

on a farm in Arlington
mother counseled children

supervised berries
blacks walked

my father distributed prices
did not stay in

did not meet nightriders
my brother wanted to be a

comm unist
berries red as

couldn’t locate the party (goneunder
nipple

in the phone book
I bur ied the rationed butter

father
froze the price of hire

mother worked the gifted and damaged
I under corn

our own gifted and
did not stay in Virginia
